Kesko Oyj (HEL:KESAV) KESKO CORPORATION PRESS RELEASE 04.12.2008 AT 10.00 1(1)

The K-Group has signed the trading sector energy efficiency agreement and made a commitment to save over 65 GWh (65 million kWh) by the end of 2016. The agreement is based on the nine percent saving target set in the Directive on Energy End-Use Efficiency and Energy Services for the period 2008-2016, starting from the level of 2005. The agreement covers all store chains that belong to the K-Group. The agreed saving target is significant, as it equals the annual energy consumption of some 15 stores the size of a K-citymarket.

The K-Group is an important consumer of energy, with an annual consumption representing roughly one percent of the total electric energy consumed in Finland. Saving energy is a central element in the K-Group's responsibility work. During the period 1995-2006, the K-Group food stores succeeded in saving a relative percentage of some 60% of heat energy and some 20% of electric energy. In the 2008 Dow Jones sustainability index assessment, the K-Group got the full score of 100 points for operational eco-efficiency.

"Efficient consumption monitoring, specific consumption levels determined for the different store types, and competent energy management form the basis of the K-Group's long-established energy saving work. 63% of our properties are included in the automatic online based consumption monitoring system, and from the beginning of 2009, 100% of the properties managed by Kesko will be included in multi-energy monitoring," says Maintenance Manager Jari Suuronen of Kesko Food. According to Suuronen, for example in 2007, the specific consumption per square metre in Kesko Food's biggest properties dropped regardless of the increased number of technical equipment in stores.

The role of competent personnel is significant in the energy saving effort. K-stores have worked for energy saving in compliance with the requirements of the K-environmental store diploma for ten years, and Anttila Oy has adopted the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. The K-environmental store diploma has been granted to nearly 500 stores. In addition, Keslog Ltd applies the ISO 14001 system in its warehousing and transport operations

"Energy efficiency is one element in the battle against the climate change, but an efficient reduction of carbon dioxide emissions is equally important. During the period 2001-2007, the emissions from electricity purchased by Kesko for the K-Group have decreased by 40%, and starting from 2008, we have purchased carbon-free electricity from the biggest supplier," says Ulla Rehell, Assistant Vice President, Corporate Responsibility.
