Handelsbanken (STO:SHBA) Following the closure of Kaupthing Bank, many of Kaupthing's Swedish customers are now having trouble accessing their deposited money.
Today, Handelsbanken therefore decided to help customers of Handelsbanken who also have an account with Kaupthing.
"We are trying to solve part of the problem. We can pay up to SEK 30,000 directly," says Kai Jokitulppo, head of deposits at Handelsbanken.
The turmoil on the financial markets has now hit the bank customer in the street. Since yesterday, several customers of the now closed Icelandic bank Kaupthing have been unable to withdraw their funds. The latest information is that there is a waiting period of over one week.
"Handelsbanken has customers who also have an account with Kaupthing. Since they can't access their money, some of these customers are having trouble with their daily finances. This is a most unfortunate situation," says Kai Jokitulppo.
Handelsbanken has therefore decided that all Kaupthing's Swedish customers who are also customers of Handelsbanken can contact their Handelsbanken branch for quick help.
"We can pay out up to SEK 30,000 if the customer brings the latest account statement from Kaupthing. If they can't find the statement and need the money quickly we can also try to help - after all this may be an emergency situation for many people, and we must be able to trust our customers,"says Kai Jokitulppo.
