Yesterday, the Australian market closed higher as the miners surged on rising commodities prices offsetting the slump dragged by Telstra after the government ruled out the company from the tender list for bidding on the national broadband network. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 share index ended the day 2.3% higher, or 81 points, at 3591.4, while the broader All Ordinaries index rose 2.4%, or 83.2 points, to 3535.7. Traditionally the market would be quiet during this period with more focus on specific stocks rather than the market as a whole.

Overnight Wall Street gained in a late rally early this morning, as investors snapped up beaten-down shares after Wall Street's worst day since the 1987, and consumer companies gained as the price of oil fell.

The Australian share market closed lower yesterday despite a positive lead from US markets and the United States central bank's rescue of global insurer American International Group (AIG). Overnight Wall Street plunged more than 4% after the US Federal Reserve has announced it would provide AIG with an $US85 billion rescue loan to save it from bankruptcy.

Yesterday, the Australian share market ended more than 1% lower following sharp losses in the US overnight, with resources and the banks leading the decline locally.
