Yesterday the Australia share market was buoyed on hope that China's economic stimulus plan would increase demand for resources. Mining and energy sectors rose on the news. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index gained 56.5 points, or 1.4%, at 4,107.8 while the broader All Ordinaries index had advanced 53.4 points, or 1.3%, to 4,060.
The Australia share market has fallen sharply with 3pc in minutes of the start of trading this morning, after Wall St tumbled overnight. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down as much as 3.3%, or 148.5 points, to 4391.9 in early trading.
Wall St closed down over 4% overnight as the US investment bank Lehman Brothers filing for bankruptcy. Yesterday, with rumours surrounding Lehman Brothers yet to be confirmed, the Australian share market finished down over 1.5 per cent. Analysts expect the Australian dollar may fall even further today with negative lead from Lehman Brothers demise and the fire sale of Merrill Lynch.
The Australian share market fell yesterday. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 87.4 points, or 1.75%, to 4980.1, while the broader All Ordinaries gave up 84.4 points, or 1.67%, to 5041.9. The resource stocks dropped again, with the commodity prices down.
The share market closed firmly in the black yesterday, driven by gains in resources and finance stocks following a positive lead from Wall Street. And US stocks gained for a third day overnight led by manufacturers and financial companies.
The Australian share market closed higher yesterday on gains from the financial sector, and following a strong lead from Wall Street over the weekend. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 rose 83.5 points, or 1.69%, to 5014.9, while the broader All Ordinaries gained 79.9 points to 5090.1.
The Australian share market fell over three per cent on Friday after troubling news from National Australia Bank (NAB) related to losses from investments in risky US mortgages, and a weak lead from Wall Street. But gains on US markets on Friday night are expected to encourage investors to pick up stocks that were oversold during Friday's 3 per cent fall.
Australian shares are set to open softer after fresh bank sector worries saw Wall Street end lower, though firmer resource stocks may lend support. Yesterday the Australian share market closed firmly in the red, with almost all sectors losing ground, dragged lower by continuing signs of weakness in the US economy. CMC Markets senior dealer Dominic Vaughan said the mining and property sectors were poor performers yesterday.
